LibreOffice has made strides toward overtaking Oracle-backed OpenOffice, and a very successful fund-raising event has carried them even further toward this goal. The Document Foundation has succeeded in collection $68000 in just eight days, ensuring the future of the software brand. The funds were raised from over 2000 donors from around the world, and the amount was beyond all expectations of the Foundation.

The funds will now serve as frozen assets, meaning that the Foundation will only be able to access the annual interest they generate. They are seeking ongoing donations through March to bankroll more of their operating expenses. The Foundation further announced that the maker of Ubuntu, Canonical, will be assisting in ongoing LibreOffice development. Bjoern Michaelsen of Canonical, and formerly of Oracle, will be a full-time team member on the LibreOffice project.

This is great news for internet users who want a variety of software for different tasks. People can download many kinds of software online. Some of the more complex computer programs however may have a large file size, and downloaders should attempt to ask themselves: "Is there high speed internet availability in my area?"

Having high speed internet will make the downloading process much easier, especially for larger files. Faster internet connections are also better for people who like to download new software on a regular basis. Most people will need to download files consistently though because of the ongoing updates of many programs as well as new releases from software companies. A slow internet connection can be very frustrating especially when downloads fail, timeout or take several hours to complete.
